And here she is!

I'm still not entirely sure the stuffing is adequate, but I didn't think it a idea to keep redoing it indefinately. By the way, after cutting the taped dress off, I also put tape on the inside to stabilize it. I only closed it after that.
Mary is covered in grey-brown cotton jersey. I simply cut four pieces roughly to size (front and back bottom, front and back top), taped the first edges on and than overlapped the next piece, pinned it down and handstitched.
A little bit of 'plastic surgery' was needed at her breasts. The tape was rather wobbly there (probably from the t-shirt 'shrinking' back into shape after I took it off) so I put some small jersey scraps under the cover, to even out the offending bits.

What do you think? Does she look like me?

  1. She does look like you!! I've been thinking of trying one of these and it's really helpful to know some of the possible pitfalls. I wonder if another type of stuffing or combination of stuffings would work? What does the side view look like? Will Mary live on some type of stand?

By the way your blog is very inspiring!!

  2. I can give you some answers: I asked my old pattern making tutor M for advice on making this. She recommended putting tape on the inside. Someone commented on my last post how she used clear tape to stop her dummy from stretching. M said the ideal stuffing would be old fashioned pillow/matrass stuffing, foam bits but newspaper, fabric scraps and p normal pillow stuffing work as well. I just used what I had available. And I plan on finding Mary a stand, yes. M recommended one of those pillars/tables sold to put a single potted plant on as being the easiest dummy-stand option, and I think I'll go with that.
