I'm still here!

Oh dear, quite a bit more that a week came and went without a blog post... I really didn't mean to do that. I've been here all the time, but work has been crazy and I'm really looking forward to a holiday now. But I'll have to wait a bit longer.

Because of the work situation, not a lot of sewing has been going on lately. I've only just started on a new top.
I find that among sewing interesting things like dresses and a jumpsuit and useful things like trousers, tops tend to get less attention than they deserve in my sewing life. All this year, when sewing tops, I've tried to move outside my comfort zone. No black, no fully fitted shapes.

This is the latest experiment I'm working on. A sleeveless wrap blouse with a huge collar. I'll tell you more about the design and its details later.
Right now, I need to make a choice: flat front or with gathers?
I made the gathered one because I wasn't quite sure I liked the flat one, but now that it's done and I've seen both, I think I prefer the first...
(Don't get me wrong, I think the gathers would work well for a lot of people, but I consider it a strength of my figure that I don't have tummy fat to conceal)

Your insight would be very welcome...

  1. Never seen such a design before... and your top looks great, no doubt.

  2. That's going to look cool! I prefer the flat front version. Can't wait to see it complete!

  3. I lean toward gathers, but I've got fluff to cover. If you like the flat one, I'd go for that version, tho.

  4. I really like the flat version, but I would wear the gathered version to hide my gooey middle. But I think the flat front version would look excellent on you.

  7. If you can wear flat front - go for it! I'd have to take the gathered, and then preferably in something that stretches (she said while sitting next to big old pile of chocolate meringues...)

  8. For you the flat front, for my middle aged figure the ruched version.

  9. My vote is the gathers, I like the visual interest of the broken stripes.

  11. Oh dear, I'm going to make it difficult for you by going for the gathers too! I like the way the stripes are broken up by the fabric folding like that, a nice contrast to the flat collars above. And you certainly do have a wonderful figure and a beautifully flat stomach, but every time you sit down or bend forward those folds will form across the middle anyway that is the nature of a fitted-to-the-waist top.
Either option you go for, it is going to be just beautiful!

  12. Oh, I like that! And yes, I prefer the flat front on you, although I suspect I'd prefer the gathers on me ;). Hmm, now I to do some gathers in striped fabric... /sigh.

Good luck with the crazy life/work! Hopefully your vacation is coming soon.

  13. Flat front for this one I think. There's enough interest going on with the stripes in different directions that gathering would only distract. Maybe save the gathered version for a plain fabric with a bit of drape?

  14. lovely top -- and I vote for flat. Gathers gives the impression you've pulled to hard when tying it shut.

  15. I love the neckline...and the gathers... it would suit you perfectly I believe, since you have a slim figure
